Blogmas Day 11: The Best and Worst of Netflix Christmas Movies 2021 v1
Happy Saturday! It's very windy and rainy in my neck of the woods (and I think everywhere), and I'm somehow under even this weather, so I'm taking it easy today. And what better way to spend a lazy Saturday in December than watching cheesy Christmas movies on Netflix? As per tradition, I'd like to save you from the flops, so without further ado, the best and worst (so far) of Netflix Christmas movies.
The Best
Love Hard - Fans of The Vampire Diaries may appreciate this super cute romcom starring none other than Elena herself, Nina Dobrev. Nina, Natalie, is a 30-something-disasters-of-dating writer living in Los Angeles. What does that mean? Well, basically she's made a career out of going on terrible dates. Then, she meets Tag (Darren Barnet who plays Paxton on Never Have I Ever) and his charm threatens to end her days of disaster dating. The only catch? He lives all the way across the country on the east coast. In the weeks leading up to the holidays, they build quite a strong foundation over the phone, and when Tag mentions he wished he could spend the holidays with Natalie, she throws caution to the wind and hops on a plane. What ensues next? Absolutely adorable chaos. The moral of this movie might actually be, don't judge a cover by its book... or maybe that's the cold medicine talking, who knows.
Bottom line: 5 out of 5 candy canes. Heartwarming!
The Good
Single All the Way - Peter and Nick are best friends and roommates living in Los Angeles. Peter is the always-single member of his family, and is thrilled that he has a boyfriend this year to take home for the holidays. No more pity party for Peter! That excitement is quickly dashed when Nick, a handyman, is doing some repairs on a home and discovers that Peter's boyfriend actually has a wife and family. As if you couldn't guess what happens next, Peter convinces Nick to travel home with him for the holidays and pretend to be his boyfriend. Nick is very skeptical, but the charade doesn't even have a chance to play out because upon arriving in Peter's small hometown, his mother (Kathy Najimy, who has not aged a day since Hocus Pocus) has already set him up on a blind date with her super hot trainer at the gym. We all know how this ends, but it was cute nonetheless and I loved the cast!
Bottom line: 4 out of 5 candy canes. Adorable, but a little too predictable.
The Must See But Basically Terrible
The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star - Yeah, you read that right, a third installment on The Princess Switch. As with all movie franchises (you know, except for the good ones), the quality has decreased with each film. I loved the first movie, tolerated the second, and frankly walked away from this one with at least a laugh. Here's the thing, I wouldn't take back watching it. So, as we established in the sequel, Vanessa Hudgens is now playing three characters. Yes, three - Queen Margaret, Princess Stacy, and Fiona Pembroke, Margaret's mischievous cousin. When a priceless Christmas relic on loan from the Vatican (?? don't quote me on this) mysteriously disappears, Margaret enlists the help of devious Fiona to get it back. What follows is an absolutely ridiculous, though sometimes touching series of events, and of course, a happily ever after. Honestly, props to Vanessa for playing the love interest of three handsome dudes.
Bottom line: 2 out of 5 candy canes. That's generous, but I do love Vanessa.
