I am nothing if not a tv junkie. I live for cozy evenings on the couch, binge watching lighthearted comfort shows. Looking back on 2023 in streaming, there were so many great new watches!
In the top spot is the fourth and final season of Never Have I Ever on Netflix. I was so devastated to see this show end, but the series could not have wrapped more perfectly. I will mis Devi and all of her pals dearly. If you’re a fan of Mindy Kaling (and I’m the biggest), you will live, laugh, love, Never Have I Ever. McEnroe, out!
In second place, after zero debate, is the fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney Plus. Save your judgement, I graduated with the original Wildcats, and for that reason, HSM will forever be part of my DNA. I came for the “Driver’s License” drama, and I stayed for the warmest, cutest, most musical “reboot” ever. WHAT TEAM? Wildcats!
Taking bronze is season 3 of Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. If you’re not thinking outside the box, a Selena Gomez/Steve Martin/Martin Short trio seems a little off the wall. If you’re super into comedy and pop culture, this grouping feels like the best idea anyone has ever had. And, if you think that sounds like plenty of A-listers for a streaming cast, wait until you see season 3. If you love Clue, you’ll adore Only Murders in the Building.
Next up, season 2 of The Summer I Turned Pretty on Prime Video, which actually would be much higher on this list if we weren’t already hitting the more heart wrenching parts of the story. TSITP is adapted from a trilogy of books written by one of my favorite authors, Jenny Han. I was as prepared as I could be, but I still cried… hard. If you like stories a la To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (also Jenny!), or Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, you will fly through this show. Grab some tissues, fam, you’re in for a tearful journey!
The 4th season of You on Netflix was just like all the others, twisted and impossible to stop watching. What is it about Joe Goldberg that keeps us all coming back? Oh yeah, it’s the charisma of a murderous sociopath, that’s what! For real though, Penn is fantastic in this role and I’ll be bummed to see the series end after the next season!
I could never forget to mention the 3rd season of Outer Banks on Netflix. The pogues are on their most insane adventure yet, and I loved every second of it! Like You, I feel like Outer Banks caters to a variety of watchers because it covers every genre under the sun - a little bit of romance, comedy, mystery, and thrill. What’s not to love?
Lucky (and last, for shows!) number seven, season 5 of Love is Blind on Netflix because, of course. Listen, this show has quite a questionable reputation amongst the people who willingly signed up to do it (……), but until it gets canceled, I will be watching, riveted, as people fall in love with a wall between them!
Now, I’m not much of a movie girlie, but there were a few new releases that I really loved this year!
Love at First Sight on Netflix (which I already mentioned in my holiday streaming favorites) was just so warm and sweet. It’s now got a permanent spot in my Christmas rotation.
Leo on Netflix is the new animated movie from Adam Sandler, and while I’m not an animated movie fan at all (which is so off brand for me, lol), I thought this one was really special and super funny.
Another gem from Adam Sandler on Netflix, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah was a hilarious coming of age story starring Adam’s daughters!
Puppy Love on Prime Video, which I also already mentioned, was a treat of a romcom. It gives me hope that we’ll soon see the resurgence of the romcom genre!
This was a NOVEL. If you made it through, tell me what I’ve missed!
Currently listening to: “Santa Stole My Lady” by Fitz and The Tantrums
