‘Tis the season for giving! Actually, every season is giving season, but this magical time of year actually isn’t so magical for everyone, so if you’re feeling called to pay it forward, I have ideas! As always, I’m sharing some organizations that feel close to my heart, but I definitely encourage you to do your research and help in a way that’s the best fit for you. There are so many avenues to give outside of monetary donations! People and organizations can also benefit from your time, skills, and platforms, as well!
Nearest and dearest to my heart always is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Cancer at any age is devastating, but childhood cancer is a concept so heartbreaking, I can’t even wrap my head around it. Thank goodness for St. Jude. From their site: The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.
Families never receive a bill from St. Jude, so their main focus can be their child’s survival. There are plenty of ways to donate to St. Jude, but if you feel inclined help year round, consider becoming a Partner in Hope with a monthly donation.
Next up, RMHC (Ronald McDonald House), which I’m sure you’ve heard of. I didn’t actually know just how widespread the RMHC reach is! Their core programs reach 62 countries and regions around the world, and in addition to providing lodging and food for families with sick children, they also offer education resources for outpatients and siblings, as well as emotional support services. From their site: While we don't administer medical care, we keep millions of children and families close to the critical care they need - and to each other. Our programs are designed with the community in mind. They provide essential care like places of respite for parents, space for children to be children, and communities of support for all family members dealing with a child's medical crisis. Learn how to get involved here!
Doctors Without Borders is another organization on my heart, as there are medical needs not being met worldwide, notably in Gaza and Ukraine right now. From their site: Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) offers medical humanitarian assistance to people based solely on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation. Our teams of doctors, nurses, logisticians, and other frontline workers are often among the first on the scene when peoples’ lives are upended by conflict, disease outbreaks, or natural or human-made disasters. Learn more and donate here.
The Trevor Project – The Trevor Project is a wonderful organization supporting LGBTQ youth. From their site: The Trevor Project is the leading suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ young people. We provide information & support to LGBTQ young people 24/7, all year round. You can donate to the Trevor Project here, or support through some of your favorite retailers. If you’re shopping A&F this holiday season both online and in stores, you’ll be given the option to round up or make a $5, $2, or $1 donation to the Trevor Project!
Okay, speed round!
If you’re able to donate your crafting skills, take a look at Project Linus, which provides handmade blankets to children in need, and Cards for Hospitalized Kids, distributing handmade greeting cards for children spending special occasions in the hospital.
When it comes to helping out our furry friends, check out American Humane, or donate time and supplies to your local shelters!
Give the gift of a magical Christmas morning to kids in need - check out Toys for Tots and find your local campaign here.
Hunger is a harsh reality for many, one that no one should have to endure. Volunteer or donate to your local food bank. If you’re in the Columbus area, check out Mid-Ohio Food Collective and take part in double your donation day, on December 13th!
These wonderful organizations are just a few that could use our help for the holiday season and beyond!
