There are so many things I love about Halloween, but top among them are festive movies and TV. This year I even made my own 31 Nights of Halloween movie list - I take my spooky viewing schedule very seriously. I’ve definitely shared my favorites before, but my tastes have evolved (lol), and I’m not sure I’ve ever ranked them.
Here goes…
To literally no one’s surprise, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown hits the #1 spot. Iconic, classic, should be at the top of everyone’s list. A Halloween tradition. Give me Linus, give me annoyed Sally, give me, “I got a rock.” If I could only watch one spooky movie every year, it would be this, on repeat. But, because I don’t have to choose just one movie…
Clue is so freaking good. Not specifically a Halloween movie, but definitely my whodunnit of choice. Once a year, Kyle and I will make a list of our dream cast for a reboot that is not actually in the works. In short, Clue has provided endless hours of entertainment for me over the years. Who plays Wadsworth in your dream reboot?
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken is a criminally underrated haunted house movie, starring none other than West Virginia’s own Don Knotts. It’s spooky, funny, and just a warm, ghostly hug!
Obviously, Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2 (tied and loved equally) are fan favorites for a reason. True Halloween movies that I appreciate even more now than I did as a kid. Why? A multitude of reasons, but yearning to be young and beautiful is definitely among them, haha.
The newest Haunted Mansion is A+, so good! It’s the perfect mix of laughs and scares, the characters’ camaraderie is cozy, and the cast is stellar. It’s got a permanent spot in our household’s yearly spooky watchlist.
Casper is near and dear to my heart, always has been, always will be. I think Bill Pullman was my very first crush… and Devon Sawa, my second. This one pulls on my heartstrings!
This is such a hot take, but Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, like…. I loved it more than the original. But, but!!!! That feels fair to say because the cast is largely the same. The sequel is gory, action packed, and hilarious. If you’ve not yet seen it, run to view it before Halloween!
Another criminally underrated gem is Dracula Dead and Loving It. Too funny to be scary, too classic-vampire-shenanigans to be kiddish. Mel Brooks is a comedic mastermind. Get this one one your SHEDULE (yes, spelled like that) asap.
Come on, now. I didn’t say I hated Beetlejuice, I just said I enjoyed the sequel more. This film walked so the sequel could run, and if the sequel is a 10/10 spooky experience, this is easily a 9.8. I love everything about this cast and this movie!
Last, but most certainly not least, another Mel Brooks classic, Young Frankenstein. Laughs. Spooks. Gene Wilder. What more could you ask for?
For now, these are the rankings. We’ve got eight days until all hallow’s eve, so you better get to watching!
xoxo
